- Echinacea:
- A dietary supplement from the Echinacea plant commonly believed to boost the immune system and thereby reduce flu or cold symptoms; also used in some skin care products to alleviate itchy or irritated skin.
- Eczema:
- A non-contagious inflammation of the skin characterized by redness, itching and possibly the discharge of pus; can cause the skin to become encrusted and scaly.
- Elastin:
- A protein similar to collagen which makes up the basic substance of elastic tissue; often added to cosmetics to keep skin hydrated.
- Electrolysis:
- The destruction and subsequent removal of living tissue, especially hair roots by using an electric current from a needle shaped electrode.
- Emollient:
- A product, which has the characteristic of softening, relaxing or soothing; especially used for the skin in lotions, balms, salves etc.
- Emulsifier:
- A substance added to a product to keep the ingredients in a suspension. These are often used in cosmetics to keep oils and acrylics in solution.
- Epidermis:
- The non-sensitive layer of skin covering the corium, (true skin).
- Epilation:
- Temporary or permanent extraction or loss of hair. (see also depilation).
- Esthetician:
- A person trained in the skills of improving cosmetic physical appearance, e.g. administering facials, applying or counseling regarding makeup application, skin and hair care etc.
- Exfoliate:
- Commonly use a coarse material to remove dead or dry skin to reveal younger, softer, healthier looking skin.
